BICPE SCIENTIFIC LIBRARY PREPARED A VIRTUAL BOOKSHELF ON THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR PREVENTING THE EXPLOITATION OF THE ENVIRONMENT IN WAR AND ARMED CONFLICTS

On November 6th, 2023, the world community celebrates International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict, declared by UN General Assembly resolution A/RES/56/4 on November 5th, 2001.

When declaring, UN General Assembly acknowledged the damage caused to the environment in armed conflicts leads to the deterioration of natural resources for a long period, often goes beyond national territories and concerns not only one state and not only the current generation.

The full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine caused and continues to cause enormous damage to the environment. As a result of hostilities, there is a violation of ecosystems, the activities of nature conservation areas, the destruction of environmentally dangerous industrial facilities, the deterioration of sanitary and hygienic indicators of drinking water. There are significant threats due to damage to nuclear and radiation-hazardous facilities. Objects of engineering infrastructure meant to contribute to the preservation of the environment, were also affected. At present, it is impossible to fully predict the environmental consequences of the war, but it is clear that the longer it lasts, the more damage it causes to the environment, and it will take more than one decade to restore it. Preservation of the environment is one of the most important challenges for Ukraine today, so the government, the public, and our partner countries are joining forces to save it.

For International Day for the Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflicts, the scientific library of BICPE has prepared a virtual bookshelf "Environment - a Silent War Victim" (access mode: http://surl.li/mvwsf ), which contains links to local and foreign web-resources .

Protecting and restoring biodiversity is the only way to preserve the quality of life to ensure the well-being and economic prosperity of current and future generations in a healthy environment.
